Common Daisy
Bellis perennis
The common daisy heralds the arrival of spring; it is among the first flowers we see blooming in meadows. What may appear to be a single flower is actually called an inflorescence. In the daisy, in fact, there are two types of flowers: the yellow ones in the center and the white ones on the outside. If you have ever played “loves me, loves me not” with Bellis perennis, you should know that you were picking flowers, not petals.
INSIGHT
Since the Middle Ages, the daisy has been associated with prophetic powers in matters of love. Over time, this belief has been passed down from generation to generation, eventually becoming the well-known “loves me, loves me not” game. Now, here is the trick: the daisy is one of the so-called “Fibonacci flowers.” Their characteristic is that the number of petals, or outer flowers, in the case of the daisy, corresponds to a number in the Fibonacci sequence. In this sequence, odd numbers occur more frequently than even ones; as a result, the answer to your question will be the same as the one you started with on the first flower.
The daisy is also linked to another tradition that has now disappeared. In the Middle Ages, ladies used it to respond to a declaration of love: if a young woman decorated a knight’s shield with two daisies, the proposal was accepted.
